How it works

This program is for those that wish to be close to your kids in Australia. If any of your children is a Permanent Resident in Australia, they may be able to sponsor you to live and enjoy the Australian life style as a Permanent Resident

You could qualify for the Parent Migration Program if at least half of your children live permanently in Australia; or you have more children living permanently in Australia than in any other single country - balance of family test.

You must be sponsored by your child, or another family member, who has been living and settled in Australia as an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident for at least 2 years. After a period of 10 years as Permanent Resident in Australia, you will be entitled to an Age Pension. You will need to satisfy the health and character requirements to qualify for this program.

Indeed, the government limits the number of available parent visas available each year. Therefore, applicants who apply and meet core criteria for this visa are placed in a global queue. Whilst the Australian Government recently added 4000 Parent places in the Family Migration stream, applicants are still experiencing substantial waits before being granted a visa.

Applicants may choose to apply for a Contributory Parent Visa where applicants, or their sponsor, pay a larger application fee and an Assurance of Support bond. The waiting period for the grant of a Contributory Parent visa is much shorter.
